Hey, the comic’s up early! How about a few votes for the effort, folks?

…3 Remotes? Okay, one to make the TV visible (only has a single button), one to turn on the TV and set it to the DVD Player, and one to control the DVD Player. I mean, sure, you’re not alone in this, but most under 40 have a near instinctive understanding after growing up with such limitations.
The “Input” and “HDMI” stuff is only relevant when first setting up a TV.

One for the TV, one or the DVD player and one for the surround sound system
and then you gotta tell the TV which input channel to choose from
It’s simple, really

Ah, of course! Silly me. And all the remotes are black and about the same size, with at least number pads, a d-pad with an “Ok” or “Enter” button, and a volume control. At least two have channel controls, not sure about the Surround Sound.

Oh really? When you have to switch between. Satt, internet, DVD, VHS, blue-ray AND no, I don’t have Betamax which would bring a whole other level of complexity as the last viable player for that would need some serious adaptors to fit into the home system. And that’s not including the possibility of someone who owns a legacy satellite system and is grandfathered out of a lot of the crap we have to deal with

The problem is not in making the device do one thing, but in not making the other 999 things it’s not supposed to do instead. I can accept that people do struggle with that.
OTOH, some people still had problems after their own face was made to be their avatar and they just would have to klick it in order to log in without a password.

*but in making it not do …

At our house, the TV has a remote, the DVD player has a remote, the sound bar has a remote, the satellite tv has a remote, and the streaming player has a remote. To watch a DVD, you have to turn the TV on and select the proper input for the DVD player and turn on the sound bar to hear anything and then you can control everything from the DVD remote. Assuming the DVD player is currently working anyway.
The remotes are all different looking enough that it’s not a problem if I’m paying attention, but if I’m in a hurry or fumbling for the remote without looking or hit a button on something while I’m fumbling for the correct remote, there can be problems.
I’m not saying I generally have trouble, but I can understand how someone else could.

I used to know how our tv worked, gut then we got a new one like five years ago and I still haven’t figured it out. I’m a twenty year old Engineering college student.

I agree with Dad. Big time.

You all laugh but this happens to us all. One time my friend’s little cousin handed my a new Game Boy to show me a video and said to turn it up. I kept flipping the thing around looking for the button and he just grunted and took it from me saying I’ll do it! It’s at that point I knew I was old.

My TV and DVD player were made by the same company, so all I have to do is turn on the player and the TV turns itself on and switches to the appropriate input. I can also control at least the TV’s most basic functions with the DVD remote. Since I usually listen through headphones (I live in an apartment and keep odd hours.), I don’t have to worry about a sound system. All nice and simple!
But, I can remember a time when I had probably half-a-dozen remotes to keep straight, so I can feel at least a little of Claw’s pain.

We have a tv and dvd player from the same company – for some odd reason they are incapable of working together.
By David Sun Sep 1st 2019 at 5:46 am
It does not require both being made by same company, it does require HDMI-CEC mode being enabled on both devices. And some devices support HDMI-CEC better than others. Sometimes the HDMI-CEC… having one devices remote try to control the other device causes problems, so some devices have it disabled by default, you have to go into setup on the device and enable it and hope it works well for you.

Reading the comments makes me so glad to only need one remote.

Who watches dvd anymore? Anything is pretty much streamed.

-I- do! No cable, no satellite; tv is just a monitor for the vhs and dvd players, and my Playstation-1. 🙂

Just make sure you never lose your Fire TV remote, the one that’s tiny and black, because a new on costs almost as much as a new Fire TV. I guess Amazon doesn’t make enough money from me? I decided it was more economical to cut the couch open from the bottom, and there was the missing remote.

He’s not alone. I work in a nursing home. And no I’m not referring to my residents when I say he’s not alone, (but that too). Whenever one of the residents have a problem with their tv, my COWORKERS (Most of whom are either my age or younger) come and get me to figure it the problem. Half the time it’s ether wrong I put it they forget to turn on something. And to be clear I don’t work in maintenance whose job is to take care of the TVs.

I once demonstrated my mastery of technology by fixing my step-brother’s TV by moving the shaving cream. (Turns out the remote wasn’t working because there was a can of shaving cream sitting in front of the sensor.)
