I dunno, recalling the whole minions getting killed in death traps and the mug of the remains of one of them seems about on the level with this.

Claw’s probably not going to Spock his way out of that Number One.

You know, he could probably pay for her to get some good medical care with all she’s had to deal with.
I can’t laugh at todays strip.

My own thought was “Why is she even showing up for work if she’s that bad off?”. Along with “‘Rule of Funny or not; Would the district really not replace somebody who was that incapacitated?”. Then again, the 2nd question did prompt the internal response of “This is the public school system we’re talking about here. The quality of her work probably remained the same!” so there’s that. @_@

Claw could always offer her a deal on her prescriptions.

This is… Jeeze, heโs really ruined her life, huh? Even if we had some reason to hate her, which we donโt… Jeeze. I hope she catches a lucky break at some point.

That’s… kind of a good point.
Schadenfreude goes down much smoother if it’s seasoned with a sense of karmic justice… or in smaller words, if we feel this person has done bad things and the universe is balancing the scales by having bad things happen to them, we accept it, and can even find satisfaction and humor in it.
I don’t think we know of anything negative this principal has ever done. She LOOKS hardened, but if she’s ever dirtied her hands, no one told us about it.

That poor woman! She’s suffered more just trying to run a school than most of the baddies in this comic! I hope she gets a Captain Pike happy ending. Otherwise it’s tragic–not funny at all. ๐

Meanwhile, back at the ranch… ever since I started reading this comic I sensed something almost familiar about it, a niggling sense around the edges of my semi-conscious. Then the AHA! moment happened when I found a book in a neighborhood Little Free Library box: The Stainless Steel Rat Joins the Circus. Claw is a down-home version of Jim deGriz!

This is one of my favorite comics, and it’s had a hundred hilarious strips. This is not one of them.

For me at least, this breaks the rule of funny because of the severity of the injury. Having her laid up with multiple broken bones, casts, and bandages break the rule of funny because it doesn’t show us the actual injuries, they’re all covered. The henchmen are easy to ignore because they’re faceless mob characters. They come off as less impactful because we never see their faces, and often times never see identifying characteristics to distinguish the henchman, with a few exceptions. It is like how we can ignore the stormtroopers getting mowed down in star wars because they’re faceless mob characters. The injuries the principle shows here are easily visible, seem apparently debilitating, and permanent. This makes them harder to write off and ignore. The comic is nearly always been funny and/or good, but I’m going to call this one a swing and a miss.
