The same device that grants infinite gold could also be used to provide infinite coal. Do with coal as Daddy Claw did with gold and those same mining companies would all go belly up. ^_^
By Floop Mon Apr 2nd 2018 at 4:35 am
Just guessing, but the Device is probably expensive to operate. Gold and Med’s are high value items. It would take a Long time to shovel through enough coal to compete with a mine.
High end solar batteries might be a thought though!
By just me Mon Apr 2nd 2018 at 5:54 am
if you supplied infinite amounts of coal, then most would burn it without any concern for the environment. instead they should make coal obsolete by stealing some alternate power source, like a high efficiency solar cell with built-in long lasting battery. something that could store one days worth of sunlight and run a house for a month and is super small
By ev Mon Apr 2nd 2018 at 3:25 pm
I don’t think changing poisoning the water in a local area for poisoning the air EVERYWHERE is much of a good trade…
Although, if they make coal obsolete by providing alternatives at a better price, unbound by the greed of lobbyists, I’m sure people will forget about coal. HOWEVER, they can still gather the coal from other dimensions and squash them into diamonds (if they had the tech) and put out coal and diamonds in one swoop. :O
By Bracey Mon Apr 2nd 2018 at 8:21 pm
That would also put the people who work the mines and depend on that income to support their families out of work.
By Justonalark Mon Apr 2nd 2018 at 11:59 pm
Plus, they wouldn’t go out of business overnight, and realizing the danger they were in would make them desperate. Trying to choke them out would mean years of them pushing harder than ever and ignoring more regulations than ever before in a desperate bid to catch up.

Oh, this should be fun. The governor is….Justice. The most ironic name for a crooked governor ever. It goes downhill from there.

Anna needs to tread carefully here.
–
Many small rural towns are dependant on a single industry to support their entire economy, in other words, if she cause the Mining Company to experience a significant drop in profits, she could single handily destroy the lives of everyone in the area. Even if she also gave everybody in town jobs working for her, then pretty much all she’s done is perform a hostile takeover, which would hardly make her much better than the people she’s fighting against, especially due to the fact that what Anna is doing is going to get her a lot of powerful enemies, and anything that happens to her will affect everyone under her/I>
–
Seriously, learn from the 2016 election:
–
Here’s why people -n rural areas voted for Trump; http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-reasons-trumps-rise-that-no-one-talks-about/
–
And a map of who voted for whom; http://brilliantmaps.com/2016-county-election-map/
–
The smartest thing Anna could would be to fix the problems that the mining is causing, such as giving the town a highly efficient Water Filtration System, or find an cheap alternative to digging under peoples homes for the Mining Company. The most she could do that would provide lasting help would be to set up an alternative industry that would be more desirable to the townsfolk and then hand control and ownership of it over to them, thus driving out the mining Company while making the town self-sufficient
By ev Mon Apr 2nd 2018 at 4:53 pm
Or give more job opportunities to these areas that don’t include killing themselves to make a little money (which is basically what coal mining is, extremely hazardous to the miners’ health as well as the environment).
The reason these towns are dependant on the one industry is because there is only the one industry to sustain them…give them something different where they can apply their skills with less health risks that’s better overall and they’ll be better off without coal.

What you said is basically my last suggestion. Y’know, the one in Bold?

Nobody reads ALL the way to the bottom anymore…
By Random Guy Tue Apr 3rd 2018 at 10:37 am
Whew, bold or allcaps means I don’t read it. I wonder how many others do the same?
By Otaku Wed Apr 4th 2018 at 1:50 pm
Random Guy, I’ve taken that stance before, but regret it now. I found out some folks with poorer eyesight favor all caps, for example, and beyond that, I’ve missed some worthwhile discussions just because someone had a different idea about what constituted good formatting. π Don’t forget that this site has a steep learning curve for formatting. You cannot edit your comments after you make them in order to correct errors, which means you cannot experiment to learn without spamming up a comments section. I don’t even know how to do a paragraph break in my comments. ^^’

I’ve never understood the “all eggs in one basket” mentality of America, especially when it’s about finite resources like coal or oil. Sure for a while the mines and factories might create a boom in a city but as the profit soon find it’s way to the tops pockets those cities who rely on them end up a wasteland when the bubble burst which would undeniable allways happen. I’m on Annas side on this, it’s better for the people relying on those jobs that might soon end anyway to get them out of their cities ans in that pioneer spirit they ancestors had rebuild a new and hopefully better community.
By Otaku Wed Apr 4th 2018 at 1:41 pm
Not sure if you can understand something that isn’t there, Sandman. π Sometimes a town gets founded to take advantage of a temporary opportunity, but not all such towns fall apart when that opportunity is over. Even when the town fades away after… is that actually a bad thing? Probably the worst examples are places that couldn’t accept how life was changing and refused to move on, and it isn’t like we can really know those places that could have come into existence and had a good run except no one decided to take the risk. π
By Otaku Tue Apr 10th 2018 at 1:36 pm
Clarification: My main point was supposed to be that America does not have an “all eggs in one basket” mentality. We’re a big country with a lot of resources, so some places do fit that description, but a lot (I’d say most) don’t. Even if they’re focused on one industry, it is a focus and not a dependency. Even when a town does have an unhealthy focus on one industry, it might be poor planning or it might be bad luck, where multiple industries have faltered or failed so that place is now down to just one. In a place like the American Midwest (for example), even being strategically located can be enough to keep a town going as it transforms into a suburb of a nearby city.
By Keith Fri Apr 6th 2018 at 1:15 pm
OH yeah, that illogic. But more importantly mr. blabber mouth can’t. π I say take down the mining company with extreme prejudice…mines have always been temporary. SMH, find another skill or move on morons that’s how real life works.
By Wizard Mon Apr 2nd 2018 at 1:54 pm
Given the future and alien tech Anna has access to, it seems to me she should be able to find a way to supply low-pollution energy at a cost lower than coal-fired generation plants. This would quickly undermine the power of coal companies. (Here in the real world, the biggest reason coal plants are being shut down is competition from cheap and plentiful natural gas.) This would be a lot less glamorous than going vigilante on coal companies, but probably more beneficial in the long run.

The issue is Zappit has to present such a technology in a verisimilitudinous manner; even if it ends up being wholly unrealistic, we have to believe it is realistic, or realistic enough for the setting. Then Zappit has to remember this difference from the real world and keep it logically consistent.
By Otaku Mon Apr 2nd 2018 at 2:21 pm
Looks like Anna – and Zappit – have their work cut out for them. I don’t have any strong analysis or even opinions on the subject of this story because I’m not overly familiar with the specifics. Now, I did have multiple, conflicting reflexive reactions while reading the strip, in response words or phrases I associate (rightly or wrongly) with other causes. The way things are set up here… I like that I cannot predict where we are going with this strip. Maybe Zappit picked a nice, easy one to start with… or maybe he’s intentionally setting Anna up for a “No win” situation, or at least, one where she herself needs to “do her homework” to avoid creating new problems while solving the old. Being a hero is not easy!
By Ladon Mon Apr 2nd 2018 at 3:31 pm
This got almost political, here. I mean, these are real world problems. As a damnable liberal, I wholeheartedly support Annaβs take on things but… hmmmmm.
By gkh Mon Apr 2nd 2018 at 11:53 pm
I would point out this is “Supervillainous” … Daddy ended up being viewed as a hero despite being out for himself- maybe Anna will become considered a villain because of the fallout from her justice crusades.
By Simon Tue Apr 3rd 2018 at 10:36 am
Yes, I was speculating along the same lines recently. Her father aimed for villainy, and ended up humanity’s greatest hero. If Anna is aiming for vigilante anti-hero, where’s she going to end up?
By Geowend Tue Apr 3rd 2018 at 2:28 am
Oh, another amusing thought…The “democrat” senator of said state has a stake in pharmaceuticals…his daughter is somehow rather high up in Mylan…you know, the folk that jacked up the EpiPen prices….

Another problem with retiring an industry is that some workers, particularly those who has invested significant time and resources into their job, are more likely to blame others than retrain. After all who wants to start over at an entry level position when they are only a few years from retirement?
By Otaku Tue Apr 10th 2018 at 1:50 pm
CJ, I’d like to build upon your point because it isn’t just retiring an industry, but forcibly retiring an industry. Even if we assume Anna is completely in the right, you’ve still got so many folks that are out of work because their bosses were abusing the system but the industry (and demand for the product) still exists. This wouldn’t be the coal industry in this area retiring because we have something better to completely replace it. Neither is it because the coal supply or demand for coal had shrunk to the point the industry was no longer self-sustaining. It is because the higherups were “doing it wrong”.

I just realized something. By attaching a tube slide to the side of the ship, and using Joey as ammo, that trick Pachydermis used a few years back might actually be a viable escape plan/weapon of last resort. Also, even though his body is technically that of an adult, as a mutant Joey might still be able to change and grow as time goes by. he could end up looking like the goo father did in battle form! Also-also, any idea how the new crimson claw may add robot henchmen to the roster, since tolerance and equality in the super villain workplace is important… unless you are some sort of super-soldier nazi man
